A.C. Half and then some

Yesterday Meghan and I headed down to Atlantic City to run the half marathon.

I cant comment on the expo because I didn’t get back from Ohio until around 930 last night. I emailed the race director and they gave the ok for her to pick up my race packet.

We parked in the Ballys garage and made our way through the casino to use the restroom and then headed to the start.

The first few miles are down and around the marina district. The best part of this portion is running through the overpass tunnel, everyone cheers and woos it up as they run through.

Around mile 6 I started to really sweat and had to get rid of my long sleeve. Talk about awkward! Next time I’ll stop running before I start stripping clothing. I wound up tearing off my bib, snagging myself with the safety pin, and stumbling before I finally got it off.

Last year my least favorite part of the race was hitting the boardwalk. It was crowded with pedestrians and those darn pushcarts and it was windy as all hell. Fortunately, this year the wind was hardly noticeable and the people on the boards seem to at least acknowledge a race was taking place.

Per my Goofy Training I was shooting to get in 16 miles today. So at mile 10 I decided that since this clearly was not going to be a PR day for me, I was going to use to the course to run the distance and then go through the finish.

I missed judge the course and covered an extra mile

Meghan was already at the finish waiting… Woohoo PR girl!!! I grabbed a couple waters, a Gatorade, 2 Johnson’s Popcorn bags, a lemon water ice, and 2 Power Bar Gel Blasts.

We headed back to the car to stretch and drop of our goodies before walking down to the Earl of Sandwich at the Showboat Casino.

We were lucky to score a Schwaggle deal for this race but even at full cost this race is great! It’s well organized, staffed with plenty of volunteers, water stations, and friendly faces. The long sleeve tech shirts and finisher medals are really well designed and wearable.

For what it’s worth, I left smiling

Stuffed!

Today I headed down for breakfast as usual…. It was the same open, heat, eat setup so I nibbled but wound up housing a power crunch bar. It was expected to rain all day, fortunately someone was on our side, dried up all the rain and gave us a beautiful day!

I finally made it to the Columbus Zoo!!! It was all that I was hoping for then ten times more!

It is what it is

So this morning even though my alarm went off at 5:30 I did not get up and go for a run:/ I just could not sleep last night, does anyone else have this problem when traveling?

Before work we headed down to the complimentary continental breakfast. They had a decent spread but the coffee was sad. I enjoyed a nice cup of tea and grabbed two apples before heading off to work.

We decided to walk it and I am glad I did because I got to witness this lovely sight

Definitely worth the chilly two miles!

It was just after 6:30 when we finally finished for the day. Fortunately, my
coworker finished earlier and went back for the rental car. They dropped me off at the hotel while a few hints of light remained so I could get in my schedule run.

I wound up doing a quick five miles. Quick because it was dark and I was scared, a danger lurked beneath my feet. Ahh uneven side walk! My nemeses. I’ve been defeated once before while traveling here and it was not pretty

I made it back to the hotel in one piece thank God!

Dinner was a small filet of grilled salmon and left over brussels.

I’m crossing fingers for tomorrow!

O Hi o

Third time must be a charm because I made it to Columbus with out any delays! I nervous because Philly looked liked this

After collecting my luggage, getting the rental car, and checking into our hotels my coworkers and I were ready to eat. PF Changs is right next to our hotel so we headed there for a quick bite. I opted for the Tuna tiki crisp and the shaved Brussels sprouts.

It was ok, but to be honest I am just not a fan of this place. The high point for sure was the citrus spice tea.

No work out to report for today but I am sleeping in my work out clothes with high hopes I’ll actually roll out with my alarm and go for a run! Night:)

Family Fun K

As far as I am concerned today couldn’t have been more beautiful. After a short walk Lily and I headed down to my parents. Family run was postponed till later in the afternoon so I had time to eat a legit brunch.

Crabs!!! Probably not the best pre run meal, but how could I resist? Yesterday my Dad steamed a bushel for Crabfest and he had some pretty sweet crabs set aside just for me since I was busy working.

Meghan and I were scheduled to put in ten miles today, so we headed to the track to put in a few miles before everyone else arrived at the bike path. Breaking up the distance and having company along the way made this run actually fun.

I am headed to Ohio for business tomorrow. Crossing my fingers it’s another great trip and that I get in some quality runs before the race on Sunday!

The Soup Experiment

I can not believe its October 9th already, September flew by. I finally got back into a fitness routine and clean eating! I ran two half marathons and completed 102 miles last  month.

I decided not to TRI last weekend because I seem to have a bit of a head cold:/  If there is anything that grosses me out more than the sound of people filing their finger nails, it’s nose blowing! I’ve been craving healthy soups everyday. While I don’t mind seeing that hot guy at Panera Bread everyday, I do mind blowing $5 on a cup of soup.

Sunday I picked up 4lbs of broccoli (great deal, dont judge), tomatoes, grapefruit, and a few avocados. I really wanted to use some of the broccoli before it began to get those weird little brown spots on it, so my soup plan was obvious. While I love ched/broc soup, I do not like its nutritional profile. I really was hoping to make a semi healthy version but instead my concoction was a little too clean. I really liked the texture and flavor I ended up with but I must admit, the cheese, pumpkin seeds, and Frank’s RedHot Sauce really brought this up a few notches!

IN THE POT

2lbs Brocolli Florets

15oz Great Northern Beans (TJ’s Organic)

(2)32oz Hearty Vegetable Broth (TJ’s Organic)

1 lg Vidalia Onion

5 Cloves of Garlic

Salt/ Pepper

Viola!!!

Soften onions, garlic, and one box of broth in a large pot, remove and blend in food processor.

Add broccoli to remaining broth and steam until no longer crisp (not mush). Process at least half of the broccoli until smooth (I left half because I like my soups a little chunky).

Add onions and broccoli puree back into the pot while adding the other box of stock.

Puree the beans until smooth, like hummus consistency, add to the big green pot.

Season with salt and pepper.

*I added a little asiago and parm cheese blend, pumpkin seeds, and Frank’s RedHot because this experiment needed something extra.*

To TRI or not to try, if that were my only question

I enjoyed five days away from my day job celebrating Labor Day with an extended weekend. The time was spent working for pennies at the restaurant, running, and spending time with the family. I’m trying to make a conscious effort to get back into eating clean. While most of what i eat is healthful I have some serious issues with portion control. My Mom and I went to Sam’s Club the other day and I got a bunch of healthy snacks. To work on my portion control, a good portion of my time yesterday was dedicated to weighing and portioning out my snacks for the next few weeks. Image

I got thrown right back into the thick of it today and didn’t get home till close to six o’clock. I took lily for a quick walk and then made my way out the door for my six mile scheduled work out. It wasn’t amazing by any means, it was quiet, no tunes again, but I did try to keep it interesting trying a new route. This one is definitely going to be a go to when the sun light begins to slip away much to early. Most of it can be run on the sidewalks and I only have to cross one traffic light. I am by no means a perfect driver but seem people are just completely oblivious to road runners. I can’t wait till i can start wearing my expensive dorky light arm bands again! Image

… Back to my big question… I am left weighing the decision to participate in the Treasure Island Triathlon this year. I threw myself into this event last year with no training besides the running, my cousins were also competing but at least had biked and swam a few times.Image

The swim (only a 1/4 mile) was brutal, I pretty much gave up my freestyle about two minutes in and proceeded to dog paddle/ float my way to the finish. The bike was not a challenge but completing 10 miles in 42:08, I can’t really say I was pushing myself. This part of the race I really enjoyed partly because I did not drown and it was fun passing my family a few times on the route. I LOVE a good cowbell!. The run was my only saving grace, I completed those 3 miles in 22:05!!! I had to revisit the results page because I AM COMPETITIVE. Even while I can not compete with others on a grand scale, I am competitive with myself. Which is why I am left wondering, should I TRI?

I have exactly one month to get into shape for this event. I’m an optimist, but I am also a realist. Can it be done? No, I can not get into the shape I was in this time last year, but if I am able to dedicate a few workouts to biking and swimming, I might feel like less of a loser when I lose:) Financially I would be committing to the race, a one month gym membership, and a new road bike. I’m looking a dropping almost a grand;/ The bike is not a necessity but I have always wanted one and I know it could be useful in cross training and if I ever want to do one of those crazy rides to the shore but it is an investment. My mind feels heavy. If only there were an easy answer… I have sometime to sleep on it, but there are some great bikes on sale this week till Sunday. Well, time for dinner..Image
